Pedagogy of the Human Body Movement Department

Nowadays, questions concerning Olympism and Sport have moved both society and academic community to understand and justify the phenomenon and to seek resources for enterprises such as applying to be host city for the Pan American Games or the Olympics. This happens because the sport reflects the way society has been organized, mirroring the differences between States, peoples and social classes. It has also become one of the main elements of contemporary cultural industry.

Established as one of the main contemporary social phenomena, sport has become a privileged field of study and intervention, not only on specific aspects of its practice – tactical and technical – but also from the educational and sociocultural point of view. One of the reasons why sport reached the status of one of the main cultural current phenomena relies on the fact that it gathers values from its genesis such as the integrating mind-body element and the pedagogic function which was applied on Paideia, in Hellenic Greece, as well as on the other hand its competitive portion fits perfectly to the post-modern condition, justified by the dependency relationship established with the mass communication media and the consequent adjustment of its practice due to the requirements and need of those means.
